A Full-Fledged Fan of Full House

I’m currently wearing a shirt with either Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen on it (who can tell?) with the words “You got it, dude!” and, of course, the Full House logo. Growing up, it was my favorite show by a long shot, and I can proudly say I’ve seen all 192 episodes of the eight-year run, which spanned nearly my entire elementary school career (plus my preschool days). There was a bit too much hugging for my taste, but for the most part, I loved every minute.

So when I was in San Francisco this week, I knew some Full House reminiscing was in order. The opening credits feature a number of San Fran landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alamo Square, where they frolic in the park and have a picnic (in most seasons’ credits, at least). Many people believe the house is one of the Painted Ladies that faces Alamo Square because they appear in the opening credits, but in actuality, the house is in a different part of town at 1709 Broderick Street — and I dutifully trudged to it as any good fan would.

A tour guide told me I’d never recognize it, but immediately when I turned onto the street, I saw the house and knew. The red door is gone (it was sold to another house on the street and repainted), but otherwise, it looks just like the house they showed so many times to establish the shot. There were no signs or other people taking pictures or anyone singing that old classic “Everywhere You Look” (except for me), but it was still exciting and brought back plenty of memories.

Sure, it was out of the way, but was it worth it? As Michelle would say, “You got it, dude.”
